
Pianist Ning An has been praised for his “impeccable technique” and insightful musicianship by New York Concert Review. A top prizewinner at many of the world’s leading international piano competitions, including the Queen Elisabeth, Cleveland, William Kapell, Paloma O’Shea Santander, and Rachmaninoff competitions, he has performed throughout North America, Europe, and Asia.
Since making his orchestral debut at sixteen with The Cleveland Orchestra, An has appeared as soloist with the London Symphony Orchestra, Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Stuttgart Philharmonic, Belgian National Orchestra, Flemish Radio Orchestra, and Tivoli Symphony Orchestra. He has collaborated with conductors including Vladimir Fedoseyev, Jörg-Peter Weigle, and Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, and was a featured soloist on the Warsaw Philharmonic’s centennial American tour under Kazimierz Kord.
An’s performances have taken him to Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, Milan’s Sala Verdi, Beijing’s Great Hall of the People, and major concert halls throughout China. He has appeared at international festivals including the International Chopin Festival in Duszniki, Poland; the Gina Bachauer Piano Festival in Salt Lake City; the Monadnock Music Festival in New Hampshire; the Bourglinster Festival in Luxembourg; and the Interlaken Music Festival in Switzerland. An active chamber musician, he has collaborated with the Ysaÿe, Daedalus, and Takács Quartets, as well as James Ehnes, Paul Neubauer, and Andrés Díaz.
In recent years, An has developed a prominent presence in Asia, with solo appearances at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing and major venues in Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen. Recent concerto engagements include performances with the National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan and the Guangzhou and Shenzhen Symphony Orchestras.
His competition honors also include top prizes at the Tivoli International Piano Competition and National Chopin Piano Competition, as well as the Alfred Cortot Prize at the International Chopin Piano Competition. He studied at the Cleveland Institute of Music with Olga Radosavljevich and Sergei Babayan and at the New England Conservatory with Russell Sherman.
An is Associate Professor of Piano at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, National University of Singapore. He has given masterclasses at leading conservatories throughout China and Taiwan, as well as at the Cleveland Institute of Music, UCLA, and the Colburn School. He is co-founder and Artistic Director of the Elite Piano Festival in Changsha, China, and is a frequent guest artist and faculty member at international festivals and academies, including the Tianjin Juilliard Piano Academy, Vancouver Piano Sessions, and the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, Italy.
