Teachers Program

Established in 1991, the PianoTexas Teachers Program was created to offer a platform for teachers to advance their skills in an 11-day intensive and innovative program. Over the years, the Program has appealed to university and private teachers who, even with their demanding teaching schedule, remain committed to practicing and performing.

The Teachers Program is regarded as one of a kind, providing opportunity for teachers to perform while meeting, studying and interacting with eminent artists. Of particular interest is the opportunity to perform concertos with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. The superb facilities of the School of Music, TCU include three concert halls (with live streaming capability), teaching studios and practicing rooms.

Whether you are an active pianist striving to sharpen your performing skills or a devoted pedagogue wishing gain more knowledge and insights, you will come away from this program fully inspired and energized. All piano teachers are welcome to apply as performers, active or general observers.

In response to requests by former participants, the Teachers and Amateurs Programs will be combined in 2023.

The Concerto

Concerto performance with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra
Sunday, June 18 at 5:00 p.m. in the Van Cliburn Concert Hall, TCU
Rehearsal: Saturday, June 17 - 10:00-12:30

The hands on understanding of performing with an orchestra is important for teachers who give advice on “the art of concerto playing” to their students. The experience of performing with an orchestra is exhilarating and rewarding and PianoTexas is one of the very few International Programs to feature teachers in a public concert with a major professional orchestra. Whilst participation with a concerto is not mandatory, we encourage teacher performers to take advantage of this rare opportunity. Memorization is optional.

The beautiful Van Cliburn Concert Hall with its superb acoustics will be the home of the Teachers/Amateurs Concerto Concert.

Soloists will be selected through a competition with a second piano. Rehearsals will be arranged.

Recitals

Teacher performers will be scheduled to play in recitals. These recitals take place in the superb acoustics of the three concert halls on the TCU campus. They are the heart of our program and allows for excellent experiences during the Festival.

All recitals are open to the general public and are recorded and streamed over the Internet. Performances will be also available as part of the Media Package for the participants to purchase.

Repertoire submitted for PianoTexas may be used for both master classes and recitals.

Each performer is limited to no more than12 minutes per performance. Performing from memory is not obligatory.

The Executive Director is responsible for organizing these recitals and his decision is final.

Master Classes

Each performer will have one master class with a guest artist. To enable an overall program balance, applicants are to submit at least two or more pieces. Concerto repertoire may be included, but the concerto selected for the concerto competition may not be performed before the competition. Memorization is optional.

The Executive Director is responsible for the allocation of performers and selection of repertoire for the master classes and his decisions are final.

The Master Classes are open to the general public. They are recorded and streamed over the Internet. Master Classes will be also available as part of the Media Package for the participants to purchase.

Private Lessons

Teachers performers will receive two private lessons (each of 50 minutes) with different guest artists. These lessons provide opportunities for in-depth examination and discussion of musical and technical matters, so although the choice is free, the repertoire should be carefully considered.

The Executive Director is responsible for the allocation of all private lessons and his decisions are final.

Depending on the availability of the guest artists, additional private lessons are possible, at extra cost. Schedule and fees should be discussed directly between the guest artist and the participant.

Active and General Observers

PianoTexas warmly welcomes Teachers who prefer to play less often in public but wish, as Active Observers, to enhance their pianistic skills through experiencing the methods and ideas of renowned guest artists. Active Observers receive two private lessons and if requested a performance opportunity in one recital.

By joining the Festival, both Active and General Observers will have the opportunity of hearing the teaching of many different artists of international standing, attending the concerto and solo concerts, as well as enjoying the “Conversations with Guest Artists”.

Depending on the availability of the guest artists, private lessons are possible, at extra cost. Schedule and fees should be discussed directly between the guest artist and the participant.

Practicing Facilities

Scheduled practice time are arranged for each performer with practice rooms equipped with grand pianos.

Active observers are most welcome to use practice facilities when not occupied by performers. There are also a number of practice rooms with upright pianos, open and free for everyone to practice. All practice rooms are open 24 hours a day.

Conversations

“Conversations” are light-hearted affairs, in which PianoTexas’ vastly experienced guest artists share valuable information along with entertaining stories and anecdotes of a life in music.

These highly popular, informal question-and-answer sessions provide excellent opportunities for constructive interactive dialogues on such important topics as the music profession, careers, recording, performing, practicing, competitions and understanding of styles.

Media Package

Performers of the Teachers Program have the option to purchase the PianoTexas Media Package. This is a collection of each participant’s recorded performances, master classes and photos.

At the conclusion of the Program, these Media Packages are individually uploaded.
