Our 40th Anniversary Program

June 10 – 20, 2021

Highly challenging and stimulating, PianoTexas International Festival & Academy has achieved the distinction as one of the leading summer piano programs worldwide. The Junior Program is the latest addition to the well-established programs of PianoTexas and we are confident that it will continue to be a leading preparatory festival for younger students aspiring to learn and master the art of piano performance. The mission of the program is to provide an all-encompassing musical experience for pianists in their most formative years. Junior Performers are welcomed into the highly inspiring and exciting musical environment that provides invaluable experience to study and interact with esteemed musicians, discover role models in the Young Artists Program, and participate in wonderful performance opportunities.

The 2021 Juniors Program has been enlarged to maximize the benefits for all participants. A concerto component will present selected Juniors to perform with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. The focus of the Master Classes and Private Lessons will be to enhance the musicality of each individual without the stress of competition.

An independent selection panel will evaluate applications from around the world. In order to provide a complete music experience no more than 24 Junior Performers will be accepted. It is our sincere hope that the teachers/mentors of these young musicians will attend with them throughout the ten days of the Juniors Program.

The goal of the well-organized PianoTexas is to provide a challenging and stimulating musical experience. TCU School of Music’s superb facilities that include two concert halls, teaching studios and practicing rooms together with the numerous venues of the Community Concert Series contribute greatly to the success of the program. All performing participants experience significant growth and new insights positively influence their formative years. Therefore, we welcome you to PianoTexas for a life-changing program.

The Concerto

Concerto performance with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra
Sunday, June 20, 2021

The experience of performing with an orchestra is of paramount importance in building a career in the music profession. With this in mind, PianoTexas is one of the very few international festivals to feature very young pianists in a public concert with a major professional orchestra. Whilst participation in the Concerto selection is not mandatory, PianoTexas recommends that Junior Performers take advantage of this rare opportunity.

Rehearsals with a second piano is scheduled and a distinguished jury select the performers for the Concerto Concert with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra.

Due to the restrictions demanded for social distancing, the repertoire for the Concerto Concert is limited.

First movement or combination movements of a concerto (not longer than 18-minutes long) should be selected from the following Concerto list:

  • Bach: All Concertos
  • Haydn: Concerto in D major, Hob. XVIII:11
  • Mozart: All Concertos
  • Beethoven: All Concertos
  • Chopin: Concertos No. 1 & No. 2
  • Mendelssohn: Concertos No. 1 & No. 2
  • Schumann Concerto in A minor, Op. 54
  • Saint-Saëns: Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 22

Recitals

Performers selected for the Junior Program are required to participate in the recitals presented by the PianoTexas International Festival & Academy. These lunchtime and evening recitals take place in the superb acoustics of PepsiCo Recital Hall on the TCU campus. Piano companies who support the Festival sponsor these programs. The performances are open to the general public and are recorded and streamed over the Internet.

Creating a real festival atmosphere for our Greater Fort Worth community, PianoTexas also presents a Community Concert Series. Selected performers from the Teachers Program appear in museums, churches, retirement homes, country clubs and piano stores.

It is necessary to control the length of all recital programs and we request the cooperation of each performer to limit his/her selected repertoire to twelve (12) minutes per performance. The Executive Director is responsible for all programs, selecting both performers and repertoire, and his decision is final.

Private Lessons

Each Junior Performer will receive altogether three lessons (each of 45 minutes). Two with the same guest artist and a third with a different guest artist. These lessons provide in-depth examination and discussion of musical and technical matters, so the choice of repertoire should be carefully considered. Our guest artists welcome the presence of the participant’s teacher. We all value their work throughout the year and are ready to assist and encourage the further development of their student.

The Executive Director is responsible for the allocation of all private lessons, and his decisions are final.

Additional private lessons are possible at extra cost, depending on the availability of Guest Artists. The scheduling and fees should be agreed directly between the accompanying adult of the Junior Performers and the Guest Artists.

Required Repertoire

PianoTexas is committed to providing its Junior Performers with a challenging and satisfying experience. For the first time, Junior Performers will have the opportunity to perform with a professional orchestra, the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. They will have one master class, three private lessons and will be offered at least two concert performances.

Junior Performers are expected to come prepared with several works of their choice for their lessons and appearances during the Festival. All works must be memorized and selected to represent the Performer’s highest artistic ability.

For information on repertoire requirements for the audition videos, see the Application Information Page.

Active and General Observers

PianoTexas warmly welcomes observers to our Junior Program. It is a wonderful opportunity to experience up close the teaching methods of renowned international Guest Artists and to attend the Festival’s stimulating series of recitals and “Conversation” sessions. The Festival is renowned for creating a professional, yet caring atmosphere where young musicians thrive. Many have found lifelong friends with similar aspirations; we believe that our offerings has changed many lives.

Active Observers’ tuition includes three private lessons (each of 45 minutes) and upon the recommendation of a Guest Artist or the Executive Director, a performance opportunity on a recital may be offered.

PianoTexas also warmly invites General Observers to register in the Junior Program, which provides access to the entire range events listed on the PianoTexas calendar.

If possible Active Observers may take additional private lessons at extra cost, depending on the availability of guest artists. The scheduling and fees should be discussed and arranged directly between Active/General Observers and the Guest Artists.

Practice Facilities

For many years, PianoTexas has maintained excellent collaboration with the major piano companies and together with the excellent pianos of the TCU’s School of Music, our concert halls and practice rooms have superb instruments.

Young Artist Performers and Active Observers practice on grand pianos on arranged schedules. General Observers have access to practice rooms upon availability.

All practice rooms are available 24 hours a day.

Conversations

Conversations are light-hearted affairs, in which PianoTexas’s vastly experienced Guest Artists share valuable information along with entertaining stories and anecdotes of a life in music.

These highly popular, informal question-and-answer sessions provide excellent opportunities for constructive interactive dialogues on such important topics as the music profession, careers, recording, performing, practicing, competitions and understanding of styles.

Media Package

Juniors Performers have the option to purchase the PianoTexas Media Package. This is a collection of each participant’s recorded performances, master classes and photos.
