12-year-old pianist Evelyn Shengxi Yang was accepted to the Juilliard Pre-College at age 9 and is the youngest student in Pro. Ernest Barretta’s studio. She was also the youngest former student (7 years old) of the late Pro. Phillip Kawin. With a deep musical sensitivity far beyond her age, Evelyn has distinguished herself by consistently winning first prizes in piano competitions from an early age, including the Grand Prize in the Crescendo International Piano Competition, Grand Absolute Platinum Medalist in the Trinity International Music Competition, First Prize in the International New Star Piano Competition, and Gold Medalist in the SIPF Virtuoso Artists Competition. The young pianist also has the honor of her performance of the Beethoven op. 79 sonata selected to be featured on Spotify, YouTube Music, and other online platforms.
In addition to solo piano competitions, Evelyn recently won the Camerata Artists International Concerto Competition, resulting in a performance of the Haydn D major Concerto with the Camerata New Jersey Orchestra at Merkin Concert Hall in NYC. She wrote her own cadenzas for this concerto, greatly impressing her teacher and garnering praise from many other professors, conductors, and other musicians. In addition, Evelyn performed the concerto with orchestra at Boston University’s Tsai Performance Center. Evelyn was also a Juilliard Pre-College Piano Concerto Competition finalist this year. Last summer, Evelyn participated in the Chicago International Music Festival as a scholarship student, and has taken masterclasses with artists such as Boris Slutsky, Alan Chow, Hie Yon Choi, Steven Spooner and etc.
Evelyn enjoys sharing her music in recitals and concerts. She has given public performances in prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, Paul Hall, Morse Hall, Willson Theatre, Tsai Performance Center at Boston University, and Armerding Center Concert Hall in Chicago. Evelyn has been an active member of the chamber music program at Juilliard, and she enjoys collaborating with other musicians. Evelyn was chosen to play duets with one of her best piano friends Taige Wang since her first days at Juilliard and has been invited to join a piano quartet group at Juilliard school. In addition, Evelyn is also a versatile composer and takes composition and conducting lessons at Juilliard. Besides piano, Evelyn plays cello and is the principal cellist in her school orchestra. Apart from music, Evelyn is also a part-time actress, as she was featured in and filmed the movie “Piano Prince” in 2022, which will be released soon. Evelyn’s greatest passions are traveling, alpine hiking, skiing, and paragliding.
